DESCRIPTION:David Bettez\, Ph.D. “Kentucky and The Great War: World War One on the Homefront.” Free & open to the public. \nDavid J. Bettez\, Ph.D.\, is the author of Kentucky and the Great War: World War I on the Home Front (UPress of KY\, 2016)\, and Kentucky Marine: Major General Logan Feland and the Making of the Modern USMC (UPress of KY\, 2014)\, which received the 2015 Col Joseph Alexander Award for Biography from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. Currently he is working on a monograph for the Marine Corps History Division regarding the Marine Corps in the final stages of the World War I Meuse-Argonne campaign\, November 1 – 11\, 1918. He and his wife live in Scott County\, Kentucky.  Dr. Bettez will be available to sign his book\, Kentucky & the Great War\, following the lecture.

DESCRIPTION:Scott Ellsworth\, Ph.D. “The Long Shadow: World War I\, Race\, and the Making of America.” Free & open to the public. \nFormerly a historian at the Smithsonian Institution\, Scott Ellsworth has written about American history and culture for the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times.  The author of Death In a Promised Land\, a groundbreaking history of the Tulsa race riot of 1921\, Scott’s newest book\, The Secret Game: A Wartime Story of Courage\, Change\, and Basketball’s Lost Triumph was awarded a PEN Book Award in 2016.  He lives with his wife and their fourteen year old twin sons in Ann Arbor\, where he also teaches at the University of Michigan. Dr. Ellsworth will be available after the lecture to sign his book\, The Secret Game.
